The majority of the IT business owners / managers I work with are incredible technicians.
They have built a regular customer base as people seek out their valued IT expertise.
Over time, so many customers seek their expertise that they run out of hours in the day to help everyone – and their minds focus on how to clone themselves to cope with the demand.
Unfortunately, cloning technology is not yet advanced enough to create a duplicate of a person. Hence, thoughts turn to hiring employees to fill some of the void instead.
But then another problem arises. All the things the owner / manager does every day, only he knows how to do it. How will he find the time to teach all of this to a new hire?
One possibility is not to train the employee. Instead, hire someone with the appropriate technical skills and let them study on the job. I’ve seen this happen and what usually happens is customers complain that service levels have dropped and they want their old technician back because a new technician is doing things differently than the owner/manager.
